When we think of sex, we often think of young adults and the middle aged. After a certain age it may be assumed by many that sex and the desire for sex wanes. After 33 years of working with the elderly, I beg to differ. Just because they are older, doesn’t mean that the desire for intimacy and sex is gone. In some ways it is even more enhanced by age. The fear as a young adult starting into sexual relationships was all about avoiding pregnancy and or commitment. As an elder sex partner, this is no longer of concern. The new fear is all about performance: performance for males and adequacy for females. Also sexually transmitted disease, STD’s which is the fastest growing among the elderly population. I have a friend who is 65 years old and her husband is in a nursing home presently. She confided to me that she has not had sex in over 5 years. She is resigned to spend the rest of her life without sex or another partner if her spouse passes away before her. I counseled her to rethink that plan for her future. I told her that if she has a more positive view of her future, she can very well have a second life after her first life with her present husband ends. She was skeptical, but I could see a spark in her eye at the thought of a physical relationship at a later date.
After a certain age, hormones change and the sexual response may not be producing the same results. There are many sexual aids to help the elderly cope. From lubrications to appliances (sex toys), the world is your oyster. It may take some change of outlook and perspective to actually purchase and use sex aids. Many feel awkward and embarrassed to buy sex toys and aids. But once these are in the house, and the sex is good if not great again, it’s all worth it. Sex can add years onto your life. So look around, find that special someone and get at it.
